What sustainable fashion actually means (and why it matters)
We need to talk about sustainability.
Actually, we need to talk about what that word even means anymore. Because right now, it's slapped on everything from fast-fashion hauls to plastic water bottles, and it's starting to lose its weight.
At Complicated Co., we don't use the word lightly. When we decided to build an ethical clothing brand independent of the traditional fashion calendar, we had to get very clear on what sustainable fashion uk meant to us. It wasn't about printing a green leaf on a label. It was about making fundamental choices about how we operate.
Here is what sustainable fashion actually looks like in practice, and why it matters.
1. It starts with the right materials
You cannot build a sustainable brand on synthetic foundations. Polyester and nylon are essentially plastics. They trap heat, shed microplastics in the wash, and sit in landfills for centuries.
That's why we exclusively use organic cotton clothing for our statement tees. Organic cotton uses up to 91% less water than conventional cotton. It's grown without toxic pesticides, which means healthier soil for the planet and softer, safer fabric against your skin. It's not the cheapest option. But it is the right one.
2. It means making things that last
The most sustainable t-shirt is the one you already own. The second most sustainable is one you buy and wear for years.
Fast fashion relies on clothes falling apart or going out of style so you have to buy more. We rely on the opposite. We want you to buy an Overstimulated tee and still be wearing it three years from now. Our organic cotton fibres aren't weakened by harsh chemical treatments, meaning they maintain their shape and actually get softer with every wash.
3. It means respecting the people who make it
Sustainability isn't just about the environment. It's about humanity. A t-shirt cannot be considered sustainable if the person who sewed it wasn't paid a living wage or worked in unsafe conditions. We work with responsible manufacturing partners because we believe that nobody should be exploited so we can wear a slogan on our chest.
4. It means honesty over perfection
We are a small business. We don't have it all figured out, and we are not perfectly zero-impact. Any brand that tells you they are is probably lying. But we are committed to making the best choices available to us at every stage of the process, and being transparent about what those choices are.
Sustainable fashion isn't about being perfect. It's about giving a damn. It's about asking questions before you buy, and choosing to support businesses that align with your values.
