You're allowed to log off: digital detox ideas for World Mental Health Day
Saturday 10 October is World Mental Health Day. The World Federation for Mental Health has built this year's theme around lived experience and real voices.
So here is ours. We're not going to give you ten steps to a calmer mind. You've read them. You may have written some of them.
We'd rather tell you the one thing we believe, and the reason this brand exists. You're allowed to log off.
Wearing how you feel: why we make statement tees
Complicated Co. started with a simple idea. Most of us spend a lot of energy looking fine. We wanted to make clothes for how life feels, not just how it looks.
So we make organic cotton statement tees, and every piece carries one quiet word. Overstimulated. Unfiltered. It's Complicated. Offline. Most slogan t-shirts shout. Ours say the bit most of us mutter under our breath.
Wearing how you feel won't fix a hard week. A t-shirt is a t-shirt. But naming a feeling takes some of the weight out of it. And when a stranger in the coffee queue reads your chest and says "same", that's a small, real moment of not being the only one.
There's more on this in our post on mood-dressing and emotional resilience.
Why we made the Offline cap and tee
Offline is the word we keep coming back to.
We have an online shop, a social feed and an inbox, so we're not here to tell you screens are the enemy. We're on them all day too.
But there's a difference between using your phone and never being off duty. Always reachable. Always replying. Always half somewhere else.
Offline is our answer to that. The Offline cap and the Offline tee (women's and men's) carry one word, for the walk, the coffee, the hour that's just yours. It's about having the space to switch off and reconnect with yourself. It isn't a digital detox with rules. It's permission.
Why switching off from work is so hard
If logging off were easy, nobody would need reminding.
Your phone is your work email, your group chats, your calendar, your bank and your camera. Picking it up to check the time can turn into forty minutes of other people's news. You're not short on willpower. Phones are built to be hard to put down.
Then there's the mental load. The lists you carry in your head. The feeling that if you stop replying, something will get dropped. We made the Mental Load Edit for that feeling.
So being always on starts to feel normal, and switching off starts to feel like something you have to earn. You don't.
Digital detox ideas that fit into real life
It rarely looks like a week in a cabin with no signal. For most of us a digital detox is much smaller than that.
- A walk with your phone in your pocket, not your hand.
- A coffee you drink while it's still hot.
- Saying "I'll reply on Monday" and meaning it.
- Notifications off after dinner.
- Your phone charging in another room overnight.
- One evening where nobody can find you.
None of this is a cure for anything. It's just room. And room is often the thing that's missing.
If today is a heavy one: where to find mental health support
Logging off helps with a busy head. It isn't the answer to everything, and we'd never pretend a cap could be.
If things feel heavier than that, please talk to someone. A friend, your GP, or Samaritans, who are free to call on 116 123 at any time of day or night. Mind also has clear information on where to find support.
And if you're doing fine this week, check in on the person who always says they are.
This Saturday, we're going offline. We hope you get an hour that's just yours too.
